Waiting for a snack

James A. Meier of Brighton, Mich., writes that not all of the birds he sees outside his house are looking for suet, peanuts or sunflower seeds.
This one is more interested in the birds that feed on the seeds:

Can someone identify this raptor? My thought is that it’s a sharp-shinned hawk, but I’m not good at hawks.
Perhaps you also are looking forward to eating a bird tomorrow. Whatever your plans, I hope you have a happy and blessed Thanksgiving.

Your bird pictures and stories thankfully received at: jlundy@duluthnews.com.

  1. I am not an expert but I would guess Cooper’s. The eyes appear closer to the front of the head compared to the sharpie. Unfortunately it is not possible to judge size and this photo isn’t ideal. On the sharp shinned the tail appears more squared off than the Cooper’s and this photo doesn’t show that well at all.

  2. Hi John,

It is indeed a Cooper’s hawk, not obvious from this photo, but previous sightings more clearly identified it as a Cooper’s.
