Jim and Sue Jensen live on Koski Road on the north side of Esko. About 5 p.m. on Sunday, they noticed what Jim thinks is an immature northern goshawk had taken a cottontail rabbit by the house.
Jim got this picture from inside the house:

Not satisfied with that, Jim set up a trail camera. On Monday, it came up with this:

Tuesday night, a fox took its turn …

So much for the goshawk’s snack.
Meanwhile, John Boland of Park Rapids caught this red crossbill on his thistle feeder on Monday:

This picture shows the bill beautifully.
They’ve been seeing red crossbills for a while, John writes, but this was his first opportunity to get a good picture.

Your bird photos and stories are always welcome at jlundy@duluthnews.com.
The second picture looks like a hawk but I cannot even venture a guess after that.
If you look here: http://www.moumn.org/cgi-bin/occurrence.pl?season=Winter#hawks , the likely hawks are the Red-tailed, Rough-legged, Bald Eagle and Goshawk. The bird in the photo is not a Bald Eagle or a Rough-legged. The Goshawk ID is probably right, but the photo isn’t adequate here.
From the video I took, you can see a white supercilium
Thru binoculars we could see a nice white supercilium.
